I will be completing the practicum for my program soon and am looking for ways to break the ice with my students. Are you able to provide me with any easy suggestions on how I can create a bond with my students on the first day of class? This entry sheds light on a little known secret that a lot prospective instructors overlook when entering the field of education. In order to be successful at your job, you need to be able to win your students over. Just because youve mastered a ton of knowledge and enjoyed spending years in school to earn your degree (like I did), doesnt mean that your students will feel the same about learning. So I came up with an innovative way to break the ice with my students that I hope youll enjoy, and your students find entertaining. And it wont cost your school more than the cost of travel to make it to the venue if you decide to follow through. From this exercise, they will learn how to conduct research, search for scholarships, seek career guidance, gain a little information about the great writers, and how to check out resources from the library. On the third day of class (I say third day because the add/drop period for each school is different), I schedule an educational scavenger hunt for the students. I assign them to teams according to their majors and educational goals, and ask them to work collaboratively to complete the given assignment. Its so fun to see how competitive they become when winning is at stake, and Im sure youll have a blast seeing and watching how they work. The scavenger hunt can take place at your local library, which shouldnt cost you anything, or anywhere on campus. And, not only will the librarians and other teachers be thrilled to assist you with your project, but it will bring equally positive recognition to your school.SAMPLE INSTRUCTIONS:Task List – Please write down your answers on one piece of paper and submit the requested documents with it by the end of the evening.
