Before started experience assignment, I try to do some research online in order to
find out what kinds of product that contains corn in it. Later, I found out that there is no
way to live without corn product, corn derivatives or any corn-fed animals. As a result,
I gave up to started this experience assignment.
The United States is a biggest corn consumption country which corn consumption
accounts for over 30\% of the total consumption of corn in the world. In recent years,
with the development of American economy, corn consumption demand also increased,
has remained at more than 200 million tons of U.S. corn consumption. Since 1991, the
average annual growth rate is about 2.12\%, corn consumption is slightly higher than
the growth rate of the maize yield, but is still lower than the United States on absolute
corn production, the difference between the production and sales, part of the
performance on the change of domestic stock, part of the performance on the
international trade of corn in the United States. Because corn nutrition is rich, plus
American eating habits, the United States is a large amount of consumption of corn
consumption per year, at more than 20 million tons, accounting for about 12\% ~ 13\%
of total consumption of corn in the United States. In recent years while eating corn
consumption quantity presents the trend of steady growth, annual growth rate of 2.58\%,
in February 2001 American food consumption reached 24.9 million tons, but eating
corn consumption proportion in the 1995 to 1996 season reaches its peak after showed
a trend of gradual decline, with the whole world eating corn consumption characteristic
of the present agreement.
Feed corn consumption is another big part of corn consumption in the United States.

The United States as a country with highly developed agriculture, animal husbandry,
the forage corn consumption also occupies a very important position in corn
consumption, occupying about 70\% of the total U.S. corn consumption. In recent years,
the forage corn consumption, maintain the stability of certain movements since 1991,
the average annual growth rate remained at 1.6\%, below the average annual growth rate
of the total consumption of corn in the United States. In March 2002, the forage corn
consumption as much as 143.5 million tons, far higher than the rest of the world. But
in recent years, the forage corn consumption accounts for the proportion of the total
consumption showed a trend of gradual decline, in March 2002 the proportion is 71.2\%,
and in April 2003, the United States department of agriculture indicate that the forage
corn consumption ratio decline to 69.9\%. Forage corn consumption to maintain steady
growth, but the ratio gradually decline, it will be in the next few years the development
trend of the forage corn consumption.
The United States is the worlds the most developed corn deep processing industry
countries, the annual consumption amount of corn rose year by year, especially fuel
alcohol corn consumption showed a trend of explosive growth. Corn starch industry is
developing very rapidly in the United States, the United States is the largest country in
the world of starch production yield, In 2003 the United States starch yield 50.8\% total
world starch production. In the recent years, the U.S. corn starch consumption has
become increasingly saturated with 1999 to 2000 flat. After 1997 because of glucose
syrup and crystalline glucose production present a weak downward trend, glucose
consumption also decline year by year, the number of corn production in 2002 only 5.4
3
million tons of corn consumption, lower than 1996 of the highest annual 800000 tons,
the decline range is 13\%. Alcohol use corn consumption growth in a recent year is
increasing rapidly, consumption of alcohol exceeds the amount of corn starch industry
as the main body of the industrial corn consumption. In 2003, the alcohol consumption
of corn production 26.7 million tons, in the last century since the 1991s average annual
growth rate reached 5.88\%. Compared with U.S. corn consumption growth rate of the
same period. From the perspective of the category of producing alcohol, drinks alcohol
production, consumption of corn is close to saturation, stay on the level of 3.3 million
tons. And fuel alcohol as the market demand, in line with the future development trend
of corn alcohol production, so the growth rate is bigger, in the past decade the average
annual growth rate reached 6.6\%, after entering the 21st century, the growth rate
significantly speeding up, the 2003 annual consumption of corn fuel ethanol production
23.4 million tons, 5.2 million tons more than a year ago, the growth rate is as high as
28.9\%, fuel alcohol will become the main direction of future corn alcohol
production. Looking for the consumption ratio, the amount of corn starch industry
consumption accounted for the proportion of total consumption of corn is more stable,
and has a tendency to decline slightly, but because of the fuel alcohol industry alcohol
broad prospects for development, the consumption of corn the trend of the proportion
is rising gradually, 2002/03 the proportion reached 13.25\%, can be expected that in this
respect, corn alcohol consumption will still have a great future.
America is not only the corn consumption most populous country in the world but
also for the corn production most populous country in the world. Corn as the main food
4
crops in the United States, throughout it occupies a very important position in
agricultural production. And the United States is the country of the world corn trade at
the same time, the corn trade accounted for 70\% of global trade, its every move is
reflected in the global corn on the spot and futures prices, will affect the layout of the
world corn production and the development of industry, so the U.S. corn spot market
and maize industry and have a holistic understanding of the quality standard is very
necessary. Corn is Americas first major crop, a total of 47 states planting corn, there
are more than 30000 corn farm in the United State. Large-scale intensive production is
an important characteristic of corn production in the United States. Americas farm
development today, the average scale has reached 177 hectares (655 acres), the existing
2 million farming households (field), 18\% of farmers (field) produce as much as 88\%
of the food. Large-scale farms are equipped with a large combine harvester, planters,
and fertilization for spraying and other modern equipment, all of these machines, almost
all equipped with a satellite positioning system, fertilization, planting, harvesting,
everything is very fine digital management.
The transgenic technology is another important feature of corn production in the
United States. Compared with traditional breeding technology, this kind of new
biological engineering technology greatly shorten the time needed for the genetic
breeding, and has strong pertinence. According to statistics, 30\% to 40\% are genetically
modified varieties of the amount of corn planted in the United States. In terms of
farmers, they are willing to grow genetically modified varieties, because these very easy
to manage, in the process of planting genetically modified (gm) crops not only increase
5
production but also reduce the dosage of pesticide, has obvious economic benefits.
From the point of view of the government, they have been trying to promote the
commercialization of genetically modified (gm) crops and encourage science and
business to conduct the thorough research to the transgenic technology.
In conclusion, corn is one of the most important product in our life. Individuals
consume corn in many different ways, for instance, food consumption, feed corn
consumption and individuals even use corn to produce alcohol which also can use as
fuel that add it in the gasoline. As a result, there is hard to find out a way to live without
coin.

Experience Assignment: Is there enough food to go around? How does our reliance
on corn products affect our health, our diet, and even our environment? For two
days, try not to eat, work with, or support any product that contains corn, corn
derivatives or eat any meat from corn-fed animals。
You will be asked to write two short research papers. Each paper should be between
1,200 and 1,500 words (4-5 pages long) typewritten (12p times new roman), doublespaced, with 1 inch margins.  As seen above, there are two assignments due in the
course of the semester. I suggest you keep a journal of your experiences and the
difficulties you face trying to fulfill that task.  You will then use these difficulties,
to relate your experiences to class readings specific to each of the assignments. 
The assignments suggest that you try to fulfill each assignment. No penalty for
failure, or for not following the requirements to the fullest. The assignment is all
about trying what other people experience in their daily lives.  The first paper is
due in class in hardcopy on October 28.  The second paper is due class in hardcopy
on December 6. Papers that are late will be penalized 10 points per day. Formatting
and other expectations appear below, and papers failing to meet them will lose
points.  Papers must have a separate cover page with your name, the paper title,
course number, and date; this is the only place where your name should appear. DO
NOT use headers/footers with your name in them. (up to 10 pts. off) 12  The
paper’s pages must be numbered. DO NOT number the cover page; p. 1 is the first
page of text, not the cover page. (10 pts. off if no page numbers) Foot/endnotes,
bibliography, charts, appendices, etc., do not count against the page limit.  Pick
one style of citation (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago) and follow it throughout your paper.
Follow the style when it comes to references inside the text or in footnotes, as well
as for the bibliography. Long quotations are unacceptable. Citation and quotation
issues, up to 10 pts. off.  Gross failure to proofread and correct obvious errors: up
to 10 pts. off.  Persistent grammar and similar errors: up to 5 pts. off per class of
error  Lateness: 10 pts. off per day late  Your bibliography should contain at least
2 references. Up to 5 pts. off.  Failure to meet page limit, font, spacing, margins. Up
to 5 pts. off per error.  Failure to follow directions (here and elsewhere in this
syllabus). Up to 10 pts. off.  Failure to have a bibliography page: 10 pts. Off  A
paper that relies primarily on basic reference sources (Wikipedia, CIA World
Factbook, Encyclopedia Britannica, etc.) for anything but statistics, election returns,
and similar data will not earn a grade higher than a C. If you are unsure about
whether a source fits in this category, all you have to do is ask me or your section
leader.
