Please help with the following problem. Pre, post, and benchmark testing are great ways to evaluate instruction. Why is comparing and contracting the best?Hello and welcome to Brain Mass today! Thank you for posting this for me to help with too! Testing is always a good way to evaluate instruction. This is because, if students are absorbing the materials being taught to them and understand the instruction, they will perform well on tests. If students are struggling to understand and do poorly on tests (especially a large number of students in a class), then there is obviously something wrong with the instruction methods or the course material that is preventing them from mastering the lessons being presented to them. The only way to really know if a student is learning or not is through some sort of testing procedure. Pre-tests are a good way to evaluate students baseline knowledge (or what they already know about a subject) before the lesson begins. By having an understanding of what they already know, an instructor can determine what materials to present to the class and the level of difficulty to make the lessons in order to keep them challenged. An instructor will also have a starting point for providing instruction as well as a better understanding of where students may be falling behind simply because he or she knew (before the lesson began) what they knew beforehand. Similar to this, post tests are given after a lesson is taught to determine what a student actually learned from it. This is also a good way to evaluate instruction because it will show if the students absorbed the information that was presented to them and understood it well enough to pass a test about it. If a large percentage of students do poorly on a post test, then an instructor knows that something did not go well with the instructional methods that were used to teach the class. He or she can then make adjustments accordingly for the next time that the class is being taught. These both work well to determine the instructional methods for individual classes. On a much larger scale, benchmark testing is used to measure student learning against quantifiable standards (What Is A Benchmark Test in Education). These are much like standardized testing (although more specific to only one subject and not multiple subjects) and given several times a year to determine how well a school is doing against other schools in the school district. Teachers use the results of benchmark tests to modify their instruction as needed and to prepare students for end-of-the-year standardized achievement tests (What Is A Benchmark Test in Education). In turn, this measures accountability to schools and directly reflects teacher performance. If a particular class scores low on a benchmark test, then the students obviously are not absorbing the lessons well and the teacher needs to modify his or her teaching to better meet the needs of the class. If he or she fails to do this and the students perform poorly on end-of-the-year standardized testing, then the teacher most likely will lose his or her job. So as you can see, these are three different yet effective ways to evaluate instruction. I hope that this information helps with your response! Please let me know if you have any questions.
